April 19th Chat Recap

4/20/2015

On Sunday April 19th we had our chat with featured guest Heather Cachat (@HeatherCachat). It was a great chat, and many resources were shared. I learned a lot about the social and emotional needs of gifted children.

Heather walked us through the SENG parent meeting series. Each question represented a weekly meeting. You can check out the topics and questions here.

Our chat moved us in many different directions. One of the topics was motivation, and how students react to challenges.

We talked about family, and family dynamics. We also talked about the roles, and strengths of gifted children in the family. We talked about communication, and the barriers that occur between parents and children. Some of those barriers are half-listening, busy doing work or playing. We also talked about why children misbehave, and what role discipline plays in that. Finally we talked about depression and stress, which effects children differently. Some children work great with stress, and others don't.

I encourage you to read the transcipt from our chat. I think that you will learn quite a bit.

Overall, the program that SENG does to help families of gifted children is very good. I was impressed with the type of questions and topics that SENG covers. I would definately suggest SENG and Heather's group, Central Ohio Gifted Support, to you and your gifted child's social and emotional needs.

Our next chat is May 3 at 9pm ET. We will be chatting with Author and Gifted Expert Dr. Jim Delisle's (@jimdelisle3) new book: Dumbing Down America: The War on Our Nation's Brightest Young Minds (And What We Can Do to Fight Back).

On April 19th the #oagctdchat will be focused on the social and emtional needs of gifted children. Our featured guest will be Heather Cachat (@HeatherCachat) who is a facilitator with SENG .

I have been trying to collect a few resources for the chat, and luckily I recieve Ian Byrd's newletter. If you haven't seen or read Ian's blog I would highly recommend it. It is very good.

Ian has a whole category of social and emotional needs of gifted children. Here is a link to that site: Ian's Social and Emotional Blog.

I would also suggest you check out SENG, and Heather's website: Central Ohio Gifted Support. Other websites like NAGC, and OAGC also have great resources.

I hope that you can join us for our chat on April 19th. It will beat 9pm ET. Just follow the hashtag #oagctdchat or follow me on twitter @jeff_shoemaker
